Yogi Government to Tackle Water Crisis in UP through Wastewater Recycling

Lucknow: In a major step to address the growing water crisis and promote sustainable development in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ambitious plan to recycle and reuse wastewater across the state. The government aims to treat 50% of the wastewater generated in the state by 2030, and achieve 100% wastewater treatment and reuse by 2035.

Under this initiative, treated wastewater will not only support agricultural activities but also serve industrial and urban needs, transforming a previously wasted resource into a key driver of economic growth.

Wastewater as a Resource
The plan envisions turning wastewater from a liability into an economic asset. A comprehensive policy is being prepared for the safe reuse of treated water across municipal services, industrial operations, agriculture, and non-potable domestic applications. This will reduce dependence on fresh water sources, conserve groundwater, and ensure long-term water security for future generations.

Three-Phase Implementation
According to Joginder Singh, Project Director of the State Swachh Ganga Mission, the plan will be implemented in three phases:

1. Phase I (2025–2030): In areas with existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) and wastewater collection systems, 50% of wastewater will be treated and reused.
2. Phase II (2030–2035): STP capacity will be expanded to ensure 100% wastewater treatment and reuse in Phase I areas.
3. Phase III (up to 2045): In areas currently lacking treatment and collection infrastructure, a phased approach will be used to achieve 100% wastewater reuse—first 30%, then 50%, and finally full coverage.

Boost to Agriculture, Industry, and Urban Development
Treated wastewater will provide an alternative water source for irrigation, enhance water availability for industries, and ease urban water scarcity. Farmers, industrial units, and city residents will all benefit from improved access to water resources.

Environmental and Economic Benefits
The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to reducing pressure on natural water resources, protecting rivers and the environment, and promoting balanced, sustainable growth in both urban and rural areas. In addition to environmental benefits, the program is expected to bring long-term economic gains to the state.

UP as a National Model
Joginder Singh emphasized that under CM Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a national model in water conservation and management. Separate plans are being formulated for urban, rural, and non-potable uses to ensure that wastewater reuse contributes not only to water conservation but also to accelerating the state’s economic development.
