Punjab Assembly Speaker Appeals to Families: “Have Two or Three Children for a Secure Future

Faridkot: Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has sparked renewed debate in the state regarding family planning and population policy. Speaking at a social program in Kotkapura, Sandhwan expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of the “one-child mentality” in Punjab, urging families to consider having two or three children instead of limiting themselves to just one.

A Warning Against the One-Child Mentality

Sandhwan emphasized that while the one-child approach was once widely adopted in Punjab, it is now creating long-term social and demographic challenges. “Children from single-child families often move abroad, leaving parents alone in old age. Limiting families to one child is not in the best interest of Punjab or Punjabis,” he said.

Addressing the Decline in Youth Population

The Assembly Speaker also highlighted that Punjab’s youth population is steadily declining due to this mindset, which poses a serious challenge for the state’s future. He has previously advocated for larger families; on November 8, Sandhwan warned that if the only child in a family falls prey to drug addiction, parents face enormous personal loss, underlining the risks of limiting families to one child.

Alignment with Religious and Cultural Views

Sandhwan’s perspective aligns with organizations such as Damdami Taksal, which have long promoted the social and cultural benefits of larger families. Proponents argue that bigger families help maintain social stability and preserve cultural traditions.

Contrasting Opinions on Population Policy

However, opinions on the issue remain divided. Congress MLA Bawa Henry of Jalandhar North had earlier advocated for a strict two-child policy in Punjab, emphasizing population control and sustainable resource use. Henry argued that unchecked population growth could place enormous pressure on employment, education, and healthcare in the future.

Sandhwan’s remarks have reignited public discussion on family planning, population policy, and the balance between tradition and modern demographic needs in Punjab, making it a key topic for policymakers and citizens alike.
