Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: In a significant step towards modernizing urban transport, the Uttar Pradesh government has received central approval to develop an extensive metro network across Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra. The plan, designed with a long-term horizon up to 2047, aims to address the rapid urbanization and future transport needs of these key cities.
Vision 2047: Long-Term Urban Transport Planning
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has initiated the preparation of a long-term metro development plan, integrating current and future urban transport requirements. The initiative aligns with the broader “Developed India 2047” vision, aiming to establish modern, safe, and accessible public transportation systems to accommodate anticipated population growth.
The plan focuses on phased and extensive expansion of metro corridors in the three cities. A roadmap is being drawn up to guide urban mobility from 2025 to 2047, ensuring metro routes and stations are coordinated with city master plans and future urban development projects. Cutting-edge metro and transit systems will be introduced to meet projected residential, commercial, and industrial growth areas.
Collaboration with Development Authorities
UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar has reached out to the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), Kanpur Development Authority (KDA), Agra Development Authority (ADA), and the Uttar Pradesh Housing and Development Council for collaboration. Authorities have been requested to provide proposed master plans, land-use frameworks, and lists of upcoming projects to ensure metro routes and stations serve future population and economic centers efficiently.
Central Government Clearance
The ambitious project has received formal No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Following this, UPMRC will prepare an Alternative Analysis Report and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to determine the suitability of metro corridors as well as other mass rapid transit systems like light metro or metro-lite in certain areas.
Impact on Traffic, Economy, and Urban Life
Urban planning experts suggest that this long-term metro development plan will significantly improve traffic management in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra. The integrated planning with development authorities ensures better connectivity to future residential and commercial hubs, enhancing commuting efficiency.
The vision document is not only focused on improving transport but also aims to boost economic activity, reduce pollution, and raise the standard of living in these cities. The initiative is being seen as a key step in preparing Uttar Pradesh’s major urban centers for future growth.
