New Delhi: On the second day of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon achieved one of the most remarkable milestones of his Test career. With brilliant bowling, Lyon surpassed legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath’s record of 563 Test wickets, claiming his 564th wicket and becoming Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history.
Lyon first dismissed Ollie Pope, equalling McGrath’s tally, and then removed Ben Duckett to set a new benchmark. Globally, Lyon now ranks as the sixth most successful Test bowler. Among Australians, only the legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne (708 wickets) remains ahead of him.
Turning the Match in Australia’s Favor
Lyon’s breakthrough came at a crucial juncture. England had started steadily at 41/1, chasing Australia’s 371, but Lyon’s two vital wickets shifted the momentum decisively in Australia’s favor, disrupting England’s rhythm. After being rested for the second Test, Lyon returned to Adelaide to showcase his mastery over spin bowling, proving once again his integral role in the Australian lineup.
From Curator to Cricket Legend
Nathan Lyon’s journey is nothing short of cinematic. He debuted in Test cricket in 2011 against Sri Lanka, taking the wicket of great Kumar Sangakkara in his very first over. Interestingly, before making a name in cricket, Lyon worked as a curator at Adelaide Oval, maintaining pitches and the ground. Today, the same venue is where he holds the record for most Test wickets at the ground (65).
Lyon’s achievement reflects his consistency, experience, and skill in spin bowling. From tending the grass at Adelaide Oval to becoming one of the most successful bowlers in the world, Lyon has carved a unique legacy. He continues to be a formidable threat to any batting lineup and remains one of Australia’s most reliable match-winners in Test cricket.
