Pakistan Strikes Back at Dhurandhar: Announces Film ‘Mera Lyari’ to Showcase Local Culture

Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster Dhurandhar is making waves not just in India but abroad as well. While the film has been widely celebrated internationally, it has also faced criticism in Pakistan for its portrayal of certain locales. In response, the Sindh government has announced a new film titled Mera Lyari, aimed at presenting the true culture of Karachi’s Lyari district.

‘Mera Lyari’ to Highlight Lyari’s True Face

Lyari, a notorious neighborhood in Karachi, has often been depicted as a hub of gang wars, with infamous figures like Rehman Daku historically making headlines. After Dhurandhar’s release, which included scenes set in Lyari, the area has again come under media scrutiny. In response, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the film on 13 December, sharing its poster on X and stating:

“Indian film ‘Dhurandhar’ is another example of negative portrayal by the Indian film industry, targeting Pakistan, especially Lyari. Lyari is not a land of violence – it is a land of culture, peace, talent, and resilience. ‘Mera Lyari’, releasing next month, will show Lyari’s true face: peace, prosperity, and pride. #MeraLyari”

International Reception of Dhurandhar

While Dhurandhar faces criticism in Pakistan, it continues to perform exceptionally well in foreign markets, excluding Pakistan and six Gulf countries. Reports suggest that in Mumbai, the film is being screened around the clock, with multiple early morning shows added to meet audience demand. Pune cinemas have also added late-night screenings to accommodate viewers.

Ban in Six Gulf Countries

Dhurandhar has been banned in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Authorities in these countries reportedly felt that, given their close ties with Pakistan, certain storylines and character portrayals could be objectionable. Despite efforts by the makers to release the film in these Gulf nations, the censor boards denied approval.

With Mera Lyari, Pakistan aims to counter what it perceives as negative media representation and celebrate the rich culture, resilience, and pride of Lyari.
