Will the Stock Market Open on Christmas? Here’s a Global Holiday Overview

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended Wednesday with marginal losses, pressured by sell-offs in oil & gas, pharma, and IT sectors. Ahead of the Christmas holiday on Thursday, investors remained cautious, resulting in slower market activity.

At the close of trading, Sensex fell 116.14 points (0.14%) to 85,408.70, while Nifty declined 35.05 points (0.13%) to 26,142.10. Market experts noted that Nifty held support between 26,100–26,130, showing some buying interest, but strong upward momentum was absent. Unless Nifty sustains above 26,200, market caution is expected to continue.

Sector Performance
On BSE, Trent, UltraTech Cement, and Maruti Suzuki saw gains, while Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Sun Pharma, and Asian Paints faced losses. On NSE, Trent, Shriram Finance, and Apollo Hospitals performed well, whereas IndiGo and Dr. Reddy’s Labs fell. Sector-wise, Nifty Oil & Gas was the weakest, down 0.76%, followed by metals and pharma, while media, realty, and select metal stocks closed with slight gains.

Will the Market Be Open Today?
Both BSE and NSE will remain closed on December 25, 2025, for Christmas. Normal trading will resume on Friday, December 26. This is the only exchange holiday in December and also the last trading holiday of the year.

Global Market Holidays
Markets worldwide are observing early Christmas closures. UK, Germany, France, Australia, and Canada will remain closed on December 26 for Boxing Day. Hong Kong is observing an extended Christmas holiday.

Key Market Holidays in 2026
In 2026, Indian markets will remain closed on major festivals such as Republic Day (Jan 26), Holi (Mar 3), Ram Navami (Mar 26), Mahavir Jayanti (Mar 31), Good Friday (Apr 3), Ambedkar Jayanti (Apr 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1), and Bakri Eid (May 28). In the latter half of the year, markets will observe Muharram (Jun 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (Sep 14), Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2), Dussehra (Oct 20), Diwali (Bali Pratipada) (Nov 10), Guru Nanak Jayanti (Nov 24), and Christmas (Dec 25) as holidays.

Certain major festivals like Mahashivratri, Eid-ul-Fitr, Independence Day, and Diwali Lakshmi Poojan fall on weekends in 2026, so no additional holidays will be observed. However, the exchanges will hold the customary Muhurat trading session on Diwali (Nov 8, Sunday) for one hour; timing will be announced in advance.
